Waiting for the New Year: A Reflective Tarot Spread

I’ve left a bowl of cream on the back steps for the fae and now I sit, Charlie cat on my lap, watching the last hours of 2018 to pass by. My usual New Year’s tarot spread is the traditional 13 card wheel of the year. And while that is still on deck for later, right now I am feeling reflective about the year that is passing.

2018 has been a real grind for me. The last few years have been tumultuous. In 2016 I was laid off from my corporate web development job and the results of the election hit me hard. 2017 saw the death of my father and the birth of my own web design and development company. In contrast, 2018 has simply been frustrating; everything just a little bit harder than I expected it to be.

So, this is a spread to look back at the year and reflect on what has been accomplished, what has been lost, what has been learned, and work that is still in progress. Although I’m writing this on New Year’s it can be any time you are looking back on a year: a birthday, a school graduation, a wedding anniversary, and many other occasions.

Five Card Spread:

First card: The overall theme and energy of the past 12 months. All things considered, how was the past year?

Second card: Some new. What was born into your life this year? We all start and stop many things within a year, this is the one with the biggest impact on the present.

Third card: Something that has past; something you miss that isn’t coming back. This might not be a physical death, but it is something you valued that has passed from your life.

Fourth card: Work in progress. This is a project that you haven’t quite completed and will carry over into the new year.

Fifth card: What you have completed. This is a lesson or a skill that you have learned and will support you in the next year.
